The L-shaped Spice Bazaar is also known as the Egyptian Bazaar because the spices used to be imported from Egypt. Built in the 17th Century to help to support the upkeep of the neighbouring New Mosque, it was restored after a fire in the 1940s. It has about 100 shops and is the largest covered market in Istanbul after the Grand Bazaar. As well as spices, today’s traders sell Turkish Delight, baklava, tea, coffee, dried fruits, jewellery and souvenirs. At the centre of the hubbub that is old Istanbul, the colourful and lively bazaar has a flower market on one side and fish, vegetable and grocery shops on another.
