Built in the 2nd Century AD, the theatre at Side was the largest in the ancient Asia Minor region of Pamphylia. It seated up to 20,000 people and hosted gladiator and animal fights as well as cultural performances. Rather than being built into a hillside in the normal style, the auditorium rests on a series of giant arches. It was used as an open-air church in Byzantine times. There are beautiful views over Side and the coastline from the top of the theatre.
