It is thought that there has been a castle on this site since ancient times. The current structure was built by Suleyman the Magnificent in 1522 and heavily restored in the 1980s. It houses a small museum, with seven galleries including archaeological and nautical exhibits and a hall devoted to local culture and traditions. Narrow, winding streets lined by old houses lead up to the castle. There are beautiful views of the town and Marmaris Bay from the castle walls.
