Even if you are not into shopping, the Grand Bazaar is one of Istanbul’s great sights. Dating from Ottoman times, it’s a labyrinth of covered streets and alleyways. Painted vaults and tiled ceilings and archways shelter narrow, bustling streets totalling five miles in length. The bazaar is home to thousands of shops selling everything from leather goods and jewellery to ceramics and carpets. Bartering is the norm. Amidst the melee, the bazaar also has cafes, banks, a post office, police station and mosque. The oldest part is the Ic Bedesten in the centre of the bazaar.
