Built on the European side of the Bosphorus in the mid-19th Century, the opulent Dolmabahce Palace took over from Topkapi as the official residence of the Ottoman sultans. As such, it was the main administrative centre of the Ottoman Empire until 1889 and again from 1909 to 1922. The 285-room palace covers 11 acres and is composed of three main areas: the men’s quarters, the ceremonial halls and the harem. Lavish features include gilded ceilings, Bohemian crystal chandeliers and a Baccarat crystal staircase. Ataturk, founder of the Turkish Republic, died at the palace in 1938.
