Built in the early 17th Century for Sultan Ahmet I, the Blue Mosque is one of Istanbul’s most iconic landmarks. It takes its name from the beautiful blue tile work decorating its interior. With its six minarets and a cascade of giant domes, the mosque competes for attention with Haghia Sophia on the opposite side of Sultanahmet Square. Still a working mosque, the lower levels of the large and ornate prayer hall are lined with more than 20,000 handmade ceramic tiles. Chandeliers, finely carved marble and huge pillars add to the breathtaking effect. Light flows in through 260 windows, although they no longer have their original stained glass.
