A vast stone and marble-clad monument marks the burial place of the founder of modern Turkey. Visitors reach the mausoleum along the Street of Lions, a 262-metre-long walkway lined by statues of lions. Ataturk’s plain tomb is in the Hall of Honour, which is decorated in gold leaf and red, black and white marble. Nearby a museum dedicated to the republic’s first president displays many of his personal items, clothes, medals, and gifts presented to him by world leaders. The mausoleum site also includes a peace park with 50,000 trees, flowers and shrubs.
