The vast Istanbul Archaeological Museum houses a major collection of classical antiquities, including Roman and Greek sculptures and a stunning display of marble tombs. The Alexander Sarcophagus - so named because it depicts Alexander the Great in battle - is among the most famous exhibits. As well as 20 galleries in the museum’s main building, a new wing highlights the archaeology of Istanbul and other Turkish regions. The museum complex also includes the Cinili Pavilion, which features beautiful tiles and ceramics, and the Museum of the Ancient Orient.
